Urban design needs to be at the core of the re-building of Christchurch. While at the scale of the city, urban design ideas are likely to shape larger interventions, it is the site-by-site process of rebuilding where urban design principles could have their most lasting impact on the quality of the city that will emerge from the rebuilding process, particularly the quality of its streets, public spaces and neighbourhoods.
The Urban Design Forum has started a dialogue amongst its members on the role that urban design should play in the rebuilding process. Now is the time for the urban design profession to take a step forward and to start to engage in the massive task ahead. We will post a number of commentaries on the urban design opportunities that are present, using the Members Only Discussion Board on UDF’s website. Based on the comments provided by members, we aim to develop a summary of the best ideas put forward and will publicise this.
