Welcome to the Urban Design Forum

The Urban Design Forum NZ (UDF) has worked to promote good urban design in New Zealand since 2000.   Modelled loosely on similar groups in Australia and England, UDF is supported by the New Zealand Planning, Landscape, Architecture, Engineering and Surveying Institutes.

The purpose of the Forum is to promote cross-disciplinary understanding of urban design amongst urban professionals, to raise awareness generally at the national and local levels of the benefits of urban design and to provide a forum for discussion of design-based approaches that are relevant to the development and management of New Zealand towns and cities.

Membership is open to anyone interested in urban design and includes planners, architects, landscape architects, engineers, surveyors and other professionals, together with politicians, academics, developers and individuals.

The organisation is run entirely by volunteers, with administrative assistance provided by the New Zealand Planning Institute.
NZS: 4404-2004Minimize

NZ Standard 4404 on Land Development and Subdivision has been reviewed

Standards New Zealand is reviewing the New Zealand Standard for Land Development and Subdivision Engineering.   The draft of NZS:4404 - 2010 is now available for review and public comment on the Standards New Zealand website (www.standards.co.nz).   Please note that submissions need to be very specific.  The recommendation from Standards New Zealand is that the best way for a submission to be adopted is to re-write the specific offending text including section, page references and preferred illustrations.

To assist you in understanding the proposed changes UDF committee members from the review team have been on a roadshow throughout the country to provide an overview presentation of the proposed amendments including:

- Why was an update needed?
- What influenced the committee’s thinking?
- What was wrong with the 2004 version?
- What  is new?
- How can you contribute in forming a response?

The attached pdf is the images form the presentation.  (note this is a large 5MB file, please allow time for download)

NZS: 4404 - 2004 is widely used as the base document by territorial authorities and designers for technical compliance for the subdivision and development of land where these activities are subject to the Resource Management Act 1991.

The Standard covers earthworks, roads, drainage, water supply, services, landscaping and is a guide to good practice setting out design objectives to be achieved and standards that can be used as a means to comply with those objectives.
